Nolar Millar Library Exhibition finished

I picked up the 'Airport' Drawing this week from the Nolar Millar Library. This ends the series of drawings in the space.  I'm stoked by the reaction. There is nothing as rewarding as people enjoying the work.  There have been inquiries into further exhibitions as well as a few commissions. My schedule is all locked up for the next few months but will have new work soon.

I will exhibit at Visual Culture Gallery, 108 Oriental Parade Wellington. The mid Feb dates TBC.

The Nolar Millar was a first step in sharing work. I wanted to share work with my local community. I was teaching design in the building at the National Drama school at the time so I selected the library as a way of reaching my colleagues and students. My immediate community.  My next community bubble is Wellington city itself. I'm looking forward to the chance to reach friends, family and my broader community with art.

Special Thanks goes to Kris Wehipeihana for welcoming my journey to begin within the walls of Nolar Millar :). And my gratitude also to Caryl McKirdy who now welcomes my next piece of work into her Gallery.

Minos - Marquette Design Sketches, painting and reference.

These are 2 of my design sketches as well as a full figure painting I made for the Minotaur sculpt. What follows is some of the supporting reference that I used to fill in the gaps in the design. From this point Nicky had to do a tonne of research of her own to make anatomical sense of the concept.  Making the creature work in 3Dimensions is a massive step up from the page...but hopefully you can see the connection between the two stages.  Moving this into a full scale creature will involve many heads to capture the qualities we've targeted in this design stage.

Minos - Marquette and Pitch

Marc and I had a great time today pitching the short film 'Minos' to the Blue Harvest team down at the NZFC offices.  In time we'll release more art and design from the process.... but first up here are some pics of an outstanding creature marquette from sculptor Nicky Campbell. Beautiful work and a thrill to reveal to the selection team our vision for the films Monster. :)

The Dead Lands - first art released on FB

NZ Film 'The Dead lands' has started a bit of social media through facebook with some of my illustrations for the film. Really enjoyed making these and working in what for me was a very different approach to film design.

Hope you enjoy these. As more about the film gets released I'll be sure to update.

Bit of drawing..

Been pretty busy the last week. No new drawings to Post.  This vid I recorded a year ago. Got some ideas bubbling as to more video art/drawing works. It'll have to wait till sometime next year.

'Minos' get's long listed by 'Blue Harvest' for NZFC funding.

Got a wonderful acknowledgement for both Marc Tyron and myself with this selection. We've both done a tonne of work on our creative process to submit a work that we thought was both strong and unique. We're in esteemed company so will value this achievement and not put too much stock in where it all might lead. Like in my drawing I'll build from the last line onto the next. Will keep you posted as to where it all leads.

'Airport' Exhibited @ Nola Millar Library.

Nola Millar Library
Toi Whakaari:NZ Drama School
Te Whaea: National Dance and Drama Centre
11 Hutchison Road
Newtown
Wellington

This 'Airport' is the second in a series of drawings leading up to an exhibition early next year. This along with the first image have been exhibited first at the Nola Millar Library.

I installed this piece today. It will remain for the next 2 - 3weeks.

It was great to catch up with staff and students. They're busy with end of year shows and exhibitions. The first image was met with quiet reserve from most so it was wonderful today to see people rushing to it. Openly discussing and enjoying the work. I'm more relaxed sharing the work and the audience, it seems to me, is more relaxed in receiving it.  A pleasure basically :)

Airport
Pen and Ink on Archival paper

Drawn by Brendan Heffernan September 2013

A drawing is a series of risks, mistakes and corrections. Each line is drawn in relation to the other to create composition. I explore as little in pencil as possible and discover the drawing within the permanence of ink.  The stakes are higher and the result alive.

2 new Drawings

I have begun 2 new large drawings.  For a few weeks I've procrastinated committing to an architectural drawing.  Another drawing has been nagging at me to be put to paper. So a second easel was set up and another large sheet of paper ready to go.  Last night I laid down the first bit of pencil work.  In some ways the image is still spatial but rather than using architectural forms I am using human figures to define the space.  This will be immensely challenging.

I'll post some progress pics soon.

New film going great

The new film is going great. I'm working with 1 other concept artist Anthony Allen. I first worked with Anthony on Kingdom Come. Anthony was a sculptor then. Now his skills are being applied to concept art and his work is very cool!

Lots of familiar faces and a few new ones. Very early days but cracking into some fun design.

Kind words from Tom McCrory as to my teaching at Toi Whakaari

Hello Brendan - great to briefly catch up with you yesterday. Just wanted to take an opportunity to celebrate your time at Toi Whakaari. Your presence in the school had an immediate and extremely positive effect where it really counts in the work of the students. You inspired them with your artistry and equipped them with a vast array of new tools with which to create. The result was a quantum leap in the quality of work being produced, one of the most noticeable shifts and marked impacts of a new staff member I saw in 16 years. As a colleague I very much valued your warmth,
positivity and openess - a very generous soul and a pleasure to be with. Thank you for the gifts you shared with the school they will reverberate through the work of those whose work you touched and my sincere good wishes to you and your delightful little family on the next step of your adventure. Much love and respect - Tom

Lovely to receive this message. Sometime this week I'll draft a response and reflection as to my time working with the students and staff at Toi whakaari.
