Daffodils

Its all been quiet from me as of late. For good reason. I've been busy Production Designing NZ film 'Daffodils' for David Stubbs and Richard Fletcher of Libertine Pictures.  Can't say much about the production for the time being except to say I couldn't be happier with the results and the experience. It was a joy and I'm very proud of the design of the film. I Look forward to seeing the final picture.

From here I'm back to the drawing board. That skeleton picture needs completion as do a few other projects that have been sidelined.

So no art to share for now but more to come.

Silvers, Monsters and Ragnarok....

Another great week!

Delivered first teaser for animated series 'Silvers'. A Few weeks of tweaking and adjustments ahead but pretty positive. Nice to be making work in a new territory.  Here's the Pitch Poster for the series.

Concept art for another film is in progress. The request is to work in the style I produced for Deadlands. Some of the drawings are pretty epic so I may be busting out the A0 paper to get everything in there.  This is perhaps the kind've work I enjoy most but then the challenge becomes containing my enthusiasm into a schedule that needs to see drawings completed soon.  AFM is fast approaching so loose ends getting tied.  Here's a Closeup on one of the drawings.  Can't reveal all.

And finally Thor Ragnarok is released this week. Reviews are out so please do take a read. I had a blast at the Australian Premire. I think the responses are either overjoyed or one of stunned shock.  Let me just say something amazing happened. Marvel took a risk that a tentpole superhero film could not just be helmed by Taika but rather actually be a Taika Waititi film. You're in for a treat.  Of all the films I've been part of, this one most of all, I felt I was in the right place at the right time to experience something special.  Perhaps I will have a chance to talk about that in more depth in time. For now go see the film. :)

Update on 1900ltd Design Studio.

I've been in my Studio on Park road now for 2 months. Moved straight in after completing Art Direction On Mortal Engines.

Alls going well.  I'm contributing to Three feature films and leading the design on an 'in development' animation.

So far so good.

There's a small team working with me. An animator, an animator/rigger, 2 Zbrush Maya modellers and a 2 man vfx team on lighting, compositing and editing.

So the work is growing, as is the team. Lots of exciting work being generated.

I'm even finding time to address a graphic novel that I'm desperate to complete the pitch on. 100 frames roughed out 15 inked and coloured. 10 days work left in it but finding 10 free days is proving increasingly difficult.  Still I'm making progress.

So onward onward. Taking 1 week at a time.

Recently finished first pitch design for a new kids animated series.  fingers crossed it gets picked up and turns into a great body of work.

6 Days - Sketch book Art

Toa Fraser's '6 Days' was recently released.  It's screening now at the NZIFF. I've been fortunate to create some early concept sketches for a couple of Toa's films now.  Deadlands and here again with 6 Days.  The limited involvement surprisingly free's me up to see the film from a different angle.  I've enjoyed doing this work very much and have since made a greater number of smaller contributions to projects.  I can't commit to full-time to every film but I can lend a perspective.  I like to think it opens up the conversation a little for the creatives involved.

Mother

Bit of news here for a new Feature called Mother From Grant Sputore. I've produced a few pieces of art in the development of this production. It'll be a great one.

2:22 Trailer

Here's the Trailer to 2:22. I am particularly proud of this one. I was an Associate Producer on the film. A step up from the art department which basically involved helping the producers get this made. My art design and filmmaking role was a dream. Conceptualising, storyboarding, Pre vising the film, scouting locations, designing sets, budgeting and breakdown pre and post production. It was a great learning curve but also an opportunity to fully apply my ideas of design, storytelling and filmmaking. A wonderful collaboration and the most involved I've been in all elements of production since my own short Night Storm. Enjoy the trailer. :) One day I'll share visuals of the process.
